Towards General Artificial Intelligence
Dr Demis Hassabis, Founder & CEO of DeepMind, is one of the three recipients of the Academy’s 2016 Silver Medal – for his pioneering work in artificial intelligence following a number of breakthroughs for DeepMind, which was founded in 2010 and acquired by Google in 2014. He was the lead AI programmer on a number of successful computer games in the 1990s and early 2000s before completing a PhD in cognitive neuroscience.
He made headlines in 2016 with AlphaGo, the first computer program ever to beat the world’s number one player of the fiendishly complex game of Go, in a contest in Seoul that was watched online by 280 million viewers. He has said he is on a mission to ‘solve intelligence, and then use that to solve everything else’.
Dr Roger Highfield of the Science Museum chairs the Academy’s Autumn Lecture.

British consumers are expected to spend £280 each on gifts over the weeks leading up to Christmas. More than half of these purchases will take place online. Almost a third of people will rely on online reviews to make their buying decisions, although recommendations from friends and family are still the main source of persuasion.

IntelligentX has created the world’s first beer brewed by artificial intelligence, which improves itself from customer feedback.
We use a complex machine learning algorithm to determine what consumers like about our beers, then brew new versions which are more finely tuned to people’s tastes.
IntelligentX is a partnership between Intelligent Layer, a machine learning firm, and 10x, an innovation and creative agency.

This film marks the beginning of a new period for me. How technology is changing humanity, and how we should deal with that, is certain to become the #1 topic for the foreseeable future. “Humanity is changing more in the next 20 years than in the previous 300 years” – this is a quote from the film that pretty much says it all. Going forward, a lot of my work will be dedicated to this challenge/opportunity.
